In addition, we also recommend it for all DIY painted MDF projects as it is less prone to fibre lift when painted. Using this product will save you a lot time and preparation to achieve perfectly smooth edges.

18mm Moisture Resistant MDF Cut to Size

18mm moisture resistant MDF cut to size is one of our most popular products. We stock MR MDF in all thicknesses however the 18mm is the first choice for DIY painting projects such as painted MDF shelves and painted MDF bedroom wardrobes etc.

Please note, the term water resistance should not be interpreted or translated to mean waterproof. If you want waterproof MDF then you should choose MEDITE Tricoya Extreme. Especially for outdoor projects.

FAQ's

Q: What is Moisture Resistant MDF?

Moisture resistant MDF, also known as MR MDF, is a type of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) that has been specially formulated to have enhanced resistance to moisture and humidity. It is produced in the same way as Standard MDF, wax and resins etc however the resins (the primary bonding agent) are resistant to moisture.

Q: Why is Moisture Resistant MDF Green?

Moisture resistant MDF is dyed green to indicate that it is moisture resistant. Fire Rated MDF contains a red dye and standard MDF is contains no dye and is the same colour throughout. The depth of colour and the fact that some MR MDFs have a brown core between two layers of green, has no corelation to the degree of moisture resistance.

Q: Where can Moisture Resistant MDF be used?

Moisture resistant MDF is designed for use in higher moisture prone areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms. It’s also the product of choice for MDF skirting boards due to their proximity to hard floor surfaces (areas of mopping) and exposed brickwork in older houses. Whilst MR MDF is resistant to moisture, we would strongly advise that product is at least primed on the non-visible edges and sides for added protection.

Q: Is Moisture Resistant MDF Waterproof?

It’s important to note that moisture resistant MDF is not waterproof and not suitable for use outside, or areas indoors where it will come into direct contact with water. Examples of the latter would include showers panels and kitchen splashbacks. If you do want to use require MDF for outdoor projects, or areas that regularly come into contact with water, we would recommend MEDITE Tricoya Extreme.

Q: Is MR MDF good for DIY projects?

Moisture resistant MDF is highly recommended for DIY projects, particularly projects that you intend to paint. MR MDF is less prone to fibre lift on its edges. In simple terms, less sanding and preparation is required to get a good finish on exposed edges compared to Standard MDF.

Q: What shapes do you cut Moisture Resistant MDF in?

We can cut MR MDF to shape to suit any project you have in mind. Simply send us a basic sketch with dimensions, and we’ll get back to you with a price. If you require MR MDF circles or MR MDF Ovals these can be ordered online above or if you have bespoke requirements for your project, feel free to get in touch.
